US equity indexes ended lower Monday after crude oil prices rose following President Donald Trump's rhetorical response to Iran's demands, dimming hopes of a quick resolution to the Strait of Hormuz closure.

* Iran said it is nearing a final agreement with Oman to define new shipping lanes through the Strait of Hormuz, but reiterated that the US must meet other conditions like compensation, an end to sanctions, and military threats before the waterway can be reopened, Reuters reported.

* In response, "I am likewise demanding compensation from Iran, for all of the people that they have killed and gravely wounded with their roadside bombs and many conflicts, for which they are famous..." President Donald Trump said in a Truth Social post.

* September West Texas Intermediate crude oil rose $3.88 to settle at $82.06 per barrel, while September Brent crude, the global benchmark, was last seen up $4.03 at $87.58.

* Blackstone's (BX) portfolio firm Safe Harbor has agreed to acquire MarineMax (HZO) for $53 per share in cash, valuing the recreational boat retailer at about $1.5 billion, including debt, the companies said Monday. Blackstone shares were up 3.3%, while MarineMax stock gained roughly 46%.

* Nvidia (NVDA) shares were down about 2.9%, the worst performer on the Dow, after the company said it is working with some of the world's largest financial firms to build a $500 billion funding package for AI infrastructure development, the Financial Times reported.
