Britain Opens Consultation on Easing EV Sales Mandate

Britain set out options Friday that could ease pressure on carmakers to switch new sales to zero-emission vehicles, launching a review of targets that gradually phase out new petrol and diesel cars, Reuters reported.

The mandate, introduced in 2024, requires EVs to make up 33% of new car sales in 2026, 80% by 2030 and 100% by 2035, with fines for manufacturers that miss the targets, the report said.

A government consultation opened Friday seeking industry views on four alternative pathways: three would retain the 2035 endpoint while cutting the 2030 target to as low as 50%, and a fourth would keep the existing path but add flexibility to help manufacturers comply, according to the report.

The Department for Transport said the review aims to keep targets "pro-business and grounded in the real world" amid supply-chain disruption and trade uncertainty, Reuters reported.
