Alpha and Omega Semiconductor (Nasdaq: AOSL) reported fiscal Q4 2026 revenue of $170.4 million, down 3.5% from $176.5 million a year earlier, and a GAAP diluted loss of $0.43 per share versus a loss of $2.58. Gross margin recovered sequentially and the operating loss narrowed from fiscal Q3, but non-GAAP profitability weakened year over year and operating cash flow remained negative.

Core financial results

Revenue increased 4.0% sequentially as strength in Advanced Computing and Communications more than offset continued weakness in traditional PCs. GAAP gross margin rose 200 basis points from fiscal Q3 to 23.1%, helping the GAAP operating loss narrow to $11.0 million from $14.1 million.

The much smaller year-over-year GAAP net loss mainly reflected the absence of the $76.5 million equity-method investment loss recorded in fiscal Q4 2025. Underlying results were less favorable: non-GAAP operating income of $2.3 million a year ago became a $4.8 million loss this quarter.

Non-GAAP figures exclude items including share-based compensation, equity-method investment results, certain impairments and tax effects. Fiscal Q4 2026 also excludes $2.6 million of China withholding tax related to the company’s CQJV investment.

Business performance and revenue drivers

Management attributed the quarter’s sequential growth to Advanced Computing, particularly AI and server applications, and Communications, where AOS continued ramping products for a Tier 1 U.S. smartphone customer. These areas more than offset ongoing weakness in traditional PCs related to elevated memory prices.

The company did not disclose revenue by end market, so the precise contribution from Advanced Computing and Communications cannot be quantified. Management nevertheless described Advanced Computing as an increasingly important contributor to both revenue and earnings.

Margin recovery narrowed losses, but cash flow remained negative

The sequential improvement was visible in both reported and adjusted margins. GAAP and non-GAAP gross margins each increased 200 basis points from fiscal Q3, while the GAAP operating loss narrowed by $3.1 million and the non-GAAP operating loss narrowed by $3.9 million.

Year-over-year comparisons show that core profitability has not fully recovered. Non-GAAP gross margin declined 70 basis points, while non-GAAP operating expenses rose to $45.3 million from $40.9 million. That combination drove the shift from non-GAAP operating income to an operating loss. Within GAAP expenses, research and development increased to $28.5 million from $24.4 million, while selling, general and administrative expenses declined to $21.9 million from $28.5 million.

Operating activities used $10.0 million of cash during the quarter, compared with $8.3 million used in fiscal Q3. For the full fiscal year, operating cash use was $16.3 million, versus $29.7 million of cash generation in fiscal 2025.

AOS ended the quarter with $180.8 million in cash and cash equivalents. Combined short- and long-term debt fell to approximately $3.6 million from $26.7 million a year earlier. Inventory, however, increased about 6.2% year over year to $201.4 million even as quarterly revenue declined, making inventory management and cash conversion important areas to monitor.

Fiscal Q1 2027 guidance

For fiscal Q1 2027, ending September 30, 2026, the revenue midpoint implies approximately 3.3% sequential growth. Management also expects further gross-margin improvement, although both GAAP and non-GAAP operating expenses are projected to increase.

Revenue$176 million ± $10 million$170.4 millionAbout 3.3% sequential growth

Non-GAAP operating expenses$46.5 million ± $1 million$45.3 millionUp about $1.2 million

Management expects an improving pricing environment and a greater contribution from Advanced Computing to support higher gross margins during the second half of calendar 2026.

Risks investors should monitor

  • PC and smartphone demand: Elevated memory prices and supply constraints continued to pressure traditional PC and broader smartphone markets, potentially limiting revenue growth.
  • Core profitability: Despite sequential improvement, AOS remained unprofitable on both GAAP and non-GAAP operating bases, while adjusted operating expenses increased year over year.
  • Cash conversion and inventory: Quarterly operating cash use increased sequentially, and inventory grew year over year despite lower revenue.
  • Dependence on product mix: Management’s margin outlook relies partly on Advanced Computing growth, improved pricing and the smartphone product ramp. Slower progress in these areas could delay margin improvement.
  • Higher near-term spending: Fiscal Q1 guidance calls for higher operating expenses, meaning expected revenue and margin gains may not immediately restore operating profitability.

Summary

AOS exited fiscal 2026 with sequential revenue and margin improvement led by Advanced Computing and Communications, but year-over-year adjusted results show that core profitability remains under pressure. Fiscal Q1 guidance points to additional revenue and gross-margin progress, while higher expenses, negative operating cash flow and elevated inventory remain the main financial issues to watch.
