Nvidia's Huang Says OpenAI Data Center Could Generate $600 Billion in Revenue

Nvidia stock edged up Monday before closing down. Shareholders looked to be cautiously welcoming the chip maker's plan to support OpenAI's huge data-center investment.

The shares closed down 0.1% at $225.01, after rising as much as $227.92 during the trading session. The stock has risen 21% this year and nearly 24% over the past 12 months.

Nvidia confirmed Monday it will provide a financial guarantee for OpenAI's large data-center campus in Ohio-named the PORTS-Pike Technology Campus.

Nvidia is now set to guarantee less than $120 billion of the project investment, down from $250 billion previously, The Wall Street Journal reported late Friday, citing people familiar with the matter. The shift was made in response to investor concerns about Nvidia's balance-sheet exposure, according to the Journal.

"Our support is limited to defined portions of lease and power payments, along with a specified residual-value commitment-not the full cost of the site or all of the tenant's obligations," Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said Monday.

Nvidia also said it would invest $1.5 billion in SB Energy, the infrastructure company set up by OpenAI and Japan's SoftBank Group, to build, own, and operate the data center under a 20-year lease to OpenAI.

Each generation of AI systems deployed at the PORTS-Pike site could represent approximately 1.5 million Nvidia graphics-processing units, representing approximately $150 billion to $200 billion in revenue, the chip company said. Over 20 years, the site could support multiple upgrade cycles.

"OpenAI's existing and planned commitments represent approximately 12 gigawatts of Nvidia compute, with an opportunity to expand to approximately 16 gigawatts if Nvidia extends the PORTS-Pike arrangement beyond the initial 4.25 gigawatts," Huang said. "At these levels, the opportunity represents roughly $600 billion of Nvidia compute through 2030."

As the dominant supplier of artificial-intelligence chips, Nvidia has looked to ease the financing bottleneck in the AI infrastructure buildout by making investments across the ecosystem. Nvidia has made 66 private-company investments in 2025 and 2026, according to FactSet, with some investors questioning whether the board should instead return that capital to shareholders.

More recently, Nvidia said it would partner with Wall Street firms to make $500 billion in capital available for its customers. While that avoids some of the concerns about Nvidia's direct exposure, the chip maker also said it might provide a "residual-value support mechanism" in such deals, limited to 25% of a deal and entered into on a case-by-case basis.

Barron's has written positively about Nvidia's strategy to act as the "buyer-of-last-resort" for AI hardware, arguing much of the investment is likely to return as revenue.
