Shares in Moderna have nearly doubled in value on news that an experimental mRNA-based vaccine it developed together with Merck succeeded in preventing cancer from coming back or spreading in a study of high-risk melanoma patients.

Merck stock jumped around 10%, putting it on track for a record close.

The success paves the way for a potentially new life-extending treatment for the thousands of people diagnosed with the deadly skin cancer each year.
