Nasdaq Moves Closer to 23-Hour Stock Trading With December Launch

Nasdaq plans to launch a new overnight trading session on Dec. 6, bringing the exchange closer to offering equities trading 23 hours a day.

Nasdaq said Monday it will introduce a new trading session from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m. Eastern time starting Sunday, Dec. 6.

Nasdaq said the move is designed to “meet rising demand for U.S. equities across the globe” and that it continues to engage with “regulators to offer nearly continuous trading 23 hours a day, five days a week, on the Nasdaq Stock Market.”

The move would mean that Nasdaq trading would run from 9:00 p.m. on Sunday to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, with a one-hour pause from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. each day. Currently the Nasdaq stock market operates from 4:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

The new trading session set to begin Dec. 6 remains subject to securities information processor, or SIP, “readiness” as well as applicable Securities and Exchange Commission rule changes, according to Nasdaq.

Nasdaq has been targeting the Dec. 6 start date for 23-hour trading for many months and signaled back in March 2025 that it was working with regulators to facilitate nearly around-the-clock trading.

CEO Adena Friedman said during the July 23 second-quarter earnings call that the exchange remained “on track for a projected launch of 23/5 trading on Dec. 6.”

The move is the latest sign 24-hour trading could soon become a reality.

The New York Stock Exchange won SEC approval in early 2025 for a 22-hour trading day that runs from 1:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. The NYSE announced on July 14 that it also plans to begin 23-hour trading on Dec. 6, with overnight sessions Sunday through Thursday starting at 9 p.m. and ending at 8 p.m. the following day.

The Cboe Global Markets in March submitted a proposal to the SEC to launch a 24-hour trading schedule.

Around-the-clock trading might not be here yet, but it looks like it’s getting close.
