Apple Changes App Store Terms to Resolve E.U. Antitrust Dispute

Apple on Tuesday announced plans to change its business terms for app developers in the European Union, as the iPhone maker looks to bring a drawn out antitrust dispute to a close.

Apple said the new terms will reduce complexity by moving every developer that distributes apps in the E.U. to a single set of business terms. The changes will go into effect on Oct. 1, according to Apple.

"These changes resolve Apple's disagreements with the Commission over business terms and alternative distribution," Apple said in a media release on Tuesday.

Apple stock rose 1.7% to $310.67 on Tuesday and has gained more than 14% this year. By comparison, the S&P 500 declined 0.5% on Tuesday.

Apple said it has worked with the European Commission to implement additional safety measures for younger users. These protections include not allowing apps distributed through Apple's App Store to link to websites for transactions if a user is under the age of 13.

Under Apple's new terms, the company will charge a 5% commission on the sale of digital goods and services in apps distributed outside the app store. The new terms also eliminate an initial acquisition fee and store services fee.

The iPhone maker has also changed commission rates for apps distributed through the App Store. Developers using Apple's in-app purchase system will pay a 26% commission, while those using alternative payment processing will pay 20%. Apps that link users to an outside platform to complete purchases will face a 15% commission.

The European Commission fined Apple last year after finding that the iPhone maker violated the European Union's Digital Markets Act by restricting developers from directing customers to alternative offers outside the App Store

Apple is also litigating app commissions in the U.S. The standard commission is around 30% on in-app subscriptions and digital purchases from its app store.
