TORONTO-Prime Minister Mark Carney on Saturday said Canada would impose dollar-for-dollar tariffs on U.S. goods including steel, pulp and paper, electronics and appliances, in retaliation for U.S. tariffs on Canadian exports that went into effect early in the morning.

Trade talks between the neighbors fell apart at the last-minute on Friday.

Canadian negotiators, Carney said, had worked "intensively" and "in good faith" with their U.S. counterparts toward inking a "comprehensive" trade deal to stave off the new levies, but U.S. officials had "proposed new terms" in recent days that "revealed the limits of their commitments to a true economic partnership."

"In short," the prime minister said at a news conference in Ottawa, "they asked too much and they offered too little."

Canada's counter-tariffs will go into effect the Tuesday after Labor Day, he said.
