Samsung Electronics Shares Plunge Over 8%, Dragging South Korea's KOSPI Index Lower

TradingKey - Samsung Electronics faces selling pressure as stock plunges over 8%, dragging South Korea's KOSPI index lower.

During the Asian trading session on August 24, Samsung Electronics (005930.KS) opened lower and continued to slide, plunging 8.35% and breaching the 260,000 won (approx. $188) mark to stand at 258,000 won. Impacted by this, South Korea's KOSPI index dropped by over 3%, falling below the key 6,700 mark to stand at 6,690.32 points.

The main reasons for the plunge in Samsung Electronics' stock price are concerns over shareholder returns and capital expenditures. Last Friday (August 21), Samsung Electronics officially announced the largest shareholder return plan in South Korean corporate history, planning to return 90 trillion to 110 trillion won to investors by 2026. The plan sparked market concerns about whether high capital expenditures would squeeze short-term free cash flow and impact capital allocation efficiency, leading institutional investors to take profits.
