Virgin Australia Holdings (ASX:VGN) cancelled two flights on the route between Australia and Fiji after a batch of aviation fuel was contaminated at the Nadi International Airport in Fiji, while Qantas Airways (ASX:QAN) switched to larger planes for the route between the two countries, ABC News reported on Friday.

Airlines were asked to fuel up at alternative airports if possible and bring in stockpiles of fuel to Fiji, because supply could not be guaranteed. Pilots were told that the issue may last until the end of August.

Virgin Australia confirmed that planes are being forced to stop between the two countries at airports in New Caledonia and Vanuatu, per the report.

Qantas said it had implemented contingency measures to maintain services while minimizing reliance on fuel supply in Nadi, according to a statement to MT Newswires.
