Market Chatter: SK Hynix Wage Deal Defeated in Razor-Thin Vote

SK Hynix (SKHY) union members rejected a compensation agreement Tuesday by a relative handful of votes, sending the chip manufacturer back to the negotiating table after eight weeks of labor talks, The Korea Herald reported Tuesday.

Of 15,045 union votes cast, 7,535 members, or 50.1%, opposed the agreement, while 7,510, or 49.9%, supported it, the news outlet reported. Turnout was 93.81%, according to The Korea Herald.

SK Hynix and the union reached a tentative agreement last week that included a 6.3% wage boost and a new structure for a profit-sharing bonus that includes SK Hynix shares.

The Korea Herald said some union members were concerned that the new bonus arrangement leaned too heavily into shares, with a proposed profit-sharing split of 40% in cash and 60% in SK Hynix shares, which the union said could fluctuate in value.

SK Hynix representatives did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
