President Donald Trump on August 28 cited economic data on X, stating that the U.S. goods and services trade deficit narrowed by 33.8% year-over-year in the first half of 2026, while exports rose 11.7%. Trump argued that tariffs are working as intended, leveling the playing field for U.S. manufacturing.

Trump quoted Fox News host Laura Ingraham: "Year-to-date, the goods and services deficit decreased $189.3 billion, or 33.8 percent, from the same period in 2025. Exports increased $198.3 billion or 11.7 percent. Imports increased $9.0 billion or 0.4 percent." He then added: "SO MUCH FOR THE TARRIFFS dragging down the economy — they're doing precisely what they were intended to do — level the playing field so our manufacturing can compete fairly and thrive. EXCELLENT news!"

Trump also provided export figures for January-June of each year: 2024: $1.599 trillion, 2025: $1.693 trillion, 2026: $1.891 trillion, calling it "a tribute to HIM."
