Market Chatter: Apple's Bulkier Mac Computers Popular for AI Use, Development

Apple's (AAPL) Mac mini and Mac Studio computers are selling well because they are well-suited to running AI agents and developing AI tools locally instead of on cloud services, The Information reported Sunday, citing its own research.

Customers including Microsoft-backed OpenAI and Amazon (AMZN) and Alphabet-backed (GOOG, GOOGL) Anthropic are buying or renting thousands of devices for their developers, the report said. Mac sales in Q2 grew nearly 29% annually to $10.4 billion, outperforming other segments of the company, the report said.

OpenAI has purchased tens of thousands of Mac mini and Mac Studio computers for reinforcement learning and training computer-use agents, and Anthropic rents Mac minis through Amazon Web Services, The Information reported.

This is because the larger Mac computers have chips adequate for AI tasks and cooling systems that won't let them overheat, the report said.

Apple did not immediately reply to MT Newswires' request for comment.
