Albemarle’s Next CEO Inherits A $250 Million Swing Per Dollar

The leading global lithium producer Albemarle Corp. (NYSE:ALB) has named BHP Group Limited’s (NYSE:BHP) Chief Commercial Officer Ragnar “Rag” Udd as its next CEO.

Udd will take over on Feb. 1, 2027, succeeding Kent Masters, who will become executive chairman at the company’s 2027 annual meeting. The announcement came a day after BHP said Udd would leave the world’s largest miner at the end of January.

“Rag brings extensive commercial and operational expertise in natural resources and has successfully led global commercial strategy and advanced disciplined growth across complex businesses,” lead independent director Gerald Steiner said.

The CEO transition comes at an inflection point. After enduring historic margin compression since the 2022 boom faded, Albemarle is retooling for a cycle increasingly shaped by grid-scale storage rather than passenger cars.

China’s Supply Chokehold and the Pricing Hangover

Chinese refining capacity and low-cost domestic output pushed the market into surplus for years, and the hangover persists. JPMorgan analyst Jeffrey Zekauskas recently cut Albemarle’s 2026 adjusted EBITDA estimate by 14.4% to $2.88 billion.

He pointed out the Chinese prices averaged about $21,625 a ton so far in the third quarter, down from $24,810 in the second. Each $1-per-kilogram move shifts Albemarle’s annual EBITDA by roughly $250 million.

Meanwhile, Beijing’s grip is now cutting both ways. Regulators revoked environmental approval for CATL’s Jianxiawo mine, China’s largest by capacity, prompting Benchmark Mineral Intelligence to halve its 2026 output forecast for the site to 32,000 tons of lithium carbonate equivalent. Inspections across Jiangxi province could put more supply at risk.

Furthermore, the demand is diverging sharply. Chinese EV sales fell 13% in the first half of 2026 after subsidy withdrawals, yet global lithium consumption jumped 45% through May, above Albemarle’s 15%-to-40% forecast range.

Stationary storage — described by the company as “off the charts” — is driving the gap, with lithium iron phosphate chemistry commanding 99.9% of the storage market.

Trade friction adds another layer. The U.S. Commerce Department on Aug. 6 imposed a one-year block on exports of lithium-ion battery black mass, redirecting recovered metals toward domestic processing.

Capex Retrenchment and Udd’s Commercial Playbook

Masters spent the downturn protecting cash flow and executing what Steiner called “disciplined execution across cycles.”

The recent results showed the discipline is paying off. Second-quarter Energy Storage sales rose 78% to $1.28 billion on an 11% volume increase and a 60% jump in realized prices.

“I am proud of what we have achieved together, and I am confident now is the right time to transition the leadership to Rag,” Masters said.

Udd’s mandate leans on more than 25 years running resource businesses across Australia, Asia and the Americas — a footprint that mirrors Albemarle’s assets in Chile, Western Australia and the U.S. At BHP he oversaw global sales, marketing, procurement and commodity strategy, and previously ran the miner’s copper and potash businesses.

“Albemarle has world-class natural resources, deep technical expertise and strong customer partnerships,” Udd said, adding he plans to build on the Energy Storage and Specialties businesses.

However, near-term hurdles remain. JPMorgan expects third-quarter adjusted EBITDA to fall to $668 million from $858 million, with the Greenbushes CGP3 plant not reaching full rates until early 2027 after a June fire.

Still, with Fastmarkets lifting its 2027 carbonate forecast to $31.40 a kilogram and inventories near historic lows, Udd inherits a company positioned to capitalize when the glut finally clears.
