The Securities and Exchange Commission said Monday that it has entered into a three-year memorandum of understanding with the Food and Drug Administration to strengthen cooperation on regulatory and enforcement matters, including information sharing relevant to both agencies.

The agreement is intended to improve market oversight and compliance while supporting the FDA's public health mission, the agency said.

"FDA-related disclosures by public companies have a significant impact on our markets," SEC Chairman Paul Atkins said, adding that the MOU will strengthen efforts to "enforce applicable disclosure requirements under the federal securities laws."
