Fresh Off a U.S. Funding Deal, This Quantum Start-up is Moving into Data Centers

After breaking out of the lab, quantum computing has found its second act, quietly taking up residence in data centers.

Fresh off a funding agreement with the U.S. Commerce Department, Australia's Diraq is bringing its quantum technology to a commercial data center in Sydney. The company will deploy one of its silicon spin computers inside a facility owned by Equinix, the world's largest real estate investment trust for data centers.

Once installed in the fourth quarter, the system will draw under 20 kilowatts of power. That makes it less energy-intensive than a home standby generator, or four central air conditioning units combined.

"This deployment is about proving operational readiness," Diraq CEO Andrew Dzurak told Barron's. "We want to understand how our quantum computer behaves in a commercial data center-the installation requirements, how it's monitored, maintained and integrated alongside existing compute."

Ultimately, integration into a data center will serve as a proof of concept for Diraq's commercial clients, Dzurak added. "This becomes a place customers can see quantum in action and start working out where it adds value alongside their AI and classical systems," he said.

This deployment is the latest sign of quantum moving from hype to real-world application. It also taps into another booming trend, artificial intelligence, that has similarly surprised investors with its rapid pace of development.

Dzurak expects quantum computing to do more than mirror artificial intelligence's trajectory, but supplement the technology by providing it with richer and more reliable data to learn from. "AI changed what we can do with data, whereas quantum computing will change what we can do with matter-the molecules and materials that make up our physical world," he said, nodding to quantum's applications in drug discovery and materials science.

This won't be the only deployment: Quantinuum partnered with Oracle earlier this month to integrate quantum processors directly into data centers. Other companies are expected to follow suit. In May, International Business Machines unveiled a blueprint for combining quantum hardware with traditional GPUs and CPUs.

However, Diraq's systems rely on a novel quantum architecture that makes the deployment the first of its kind. The company builds silicon spin quantum computers, which operate by trapping individual electrons inside nanoscale structures, known as quantum dots, etched directly onto a silicon wafer.

Dzurak noted that Diraq's technology is naturally easier to integrate into data centers than competing quantum architectures that require massive laser arrays, photonic hardware, or complex cooling networks.

This architecture is gaining support. Diraq was thrust into the spotlight in May as one of nine companies tentatively selected for funding under the 2022 Chips and Science Act.

Under a letter of intent with the Commerce Department, Diraq is set to receive $38 million from a roughly $2 billion federal funding package. The bulk of that package has been allocated to IBM to build a quantum chip foundry-perhaps the clearest sign yet of Washington's priority to fortify the domestic supply chain.

For Equinix, the operator of nearly 300 data centers worldwide, working with Diraq makes sense. "Quantum computing is on track to go from a few specialized research labs to widespread commercial adoption, and Diraq is one example," Guy Danskine, managing director for the Western United States Region, told Barron's.

For emerging technology to truly take off, easy deployment is crucial, Danskine noted. In his view, computing breakthroughs deliver the most value when they fit directly into existing infrastructure instead of forcing the industry to build new ecosystems from scratch.

The Diraq partnership is the realization of the hybrid computing model touted by industry executives, where quantum systems work alongside existing classical infrastructure to collaboratively solve problems. One of the best places for this to happen at scale is within data centers.

Indeed, hybrid quantum-classical computing may be the next logical step in the evolution of information processing-a paradigm shift that builds on existing technology.

"Just as data centers evolved to support cloud and AI workloads, they will increasingly need to accommodate quantum technologies as they mature," Danskine told Barron's. The distant future of quantum computing, it turns out, is arriving faster than expected.
