Microsoft's Edge Remains Exempt From Gatekeeper Designation in European Court Ruling

Microsoft's (MSFT) web browser Edge remains exempt from certain European Union rules affecting big tech, according to a court ruling released Wednesday.

The General Court rejected Norwegian browser maker Opera's (OPRA) challenge against EU antitrust regulators' decision to exempt Edge from the rules, saying the web browser was not an important gateway for businesses to reach users even though it met the quantitative criteria set out under the Digital Markets Act.

Gatekeepers are large digital platforms providing so-called core platform services, such as online search engines, app stores and messenger services. Gatekeepers must comply with certain obligations and prohibitions listed in the Act, according to the EU.

Microsoft and Opera did not immediately respond to a request for comment from MT Newswires.
