Micron Stock Closes Above $1,000. Why It's not What it Seems.

Investors on Friday pushed shares of Micron Technology to close above $1,000 for the first time since mid-August, following the release of OpenAI's latest artificial-intelligence model and as the AI-trade picked up momentum.

Micron stock advanced 6.1% to $1,016.59 on Friday, marking the first time shares have closed above $1,000 since Aug. 17, according to Dow Jones Market Data. Shares of the memory-chip company ended the week up 9%.

The stock held well even as the S&P 500 dropped 0.4% following a stronger-than-expected jobs report, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 0.5% and Nasdaq Composite fell 0.3%.

Micron stock benefited from renewed enthusiasm for stocks associated with AI infrastructure. Some of the excitement might be due to the launch of OpenAI's new GPT-6 Astra AI model. The model performed well on early benchmarking tests, which could ease concerns about the ChatGPT developer's $1.4 trillion in spending commitments.

Among other memory companies, American depositary receipts of SK Hynix were up 8.1%. Sandisk gained 11.9% and was the best-performing stock in the S&P 500 for the trading session.

Don't make too much of the one-day move. Since peaking in June, the stock has dropped 20%, and has been hugging its 50-day moving average, around the $935 level, since mid-August. It's unclear as of yet whether the 50-day has become support or resistance for the stock.

A chance for a decisive break higher could come when Micron reports its fiscal fourth-quarter earnings, due Sept. 30. Barron's previously argued Micron could double in price when it was trading around above $1,100.
