Oil, Bond Yields Pressure Asian Stock Markets

Asian stock markets opened lower on Wall Street cues and could not recover, pressured by rising global bond yields and crude oil prices.

Hong Kong and Shanghai finished in the red, as did most other regional exchanges, although Tokyo edged higher.

Yields on 10-year Japanese government bonds inched up towards 3%, while Brent crude oil futures traded up 0.8% to $101.99 a barrel during Asian market hours.

In Japan, the Nikkei 225 opened lower but rose to the close, finishing up 0.2% as traders waded back into AI and chip stocks after recent declines.

The benchmark Nikkei 225 rose 128.17 to 65,270.95, while losing issues outnumbered gainers 111 to 110.

Leading the upside was electronics manufacturer Sharp, up 6.3%, while Japan Steel Works declined 6.5%.

In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng Index opened lower and could not recover, closing down 1.3% on sagging tech and property shares.

The broad gauge Hang Seng fell 320.49 to 24,954.47, as losing issues outnumbered gainers 77 to 16. The Hang Seng TECH Index lost 2% on the day, while the Mainland Properties Index fell 1.7%.

Leading the upside was China Life, gaining 2.2%, while Weichai Power declined 7.1%.

On the mainland, the Shanghai Composite fell 0.4% to 3,934.40.

In economic news, total vehicle sales in China dropped 5.1% on the year in August to 2.71 million units, reported the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers.

On the other regional exchanges, the S. Korean KOSPI fell 0.2%; the Taiwan TWSE declined 0.5%; the Australian ASX 200 declined 1%; the Singapore Straits Times Index fell 0.7%, and the Thai Set declined 0.2%. In late trading in Mumbai, the Sensex was down 0.2%.

The MSCI All Country Asia Pacific Index fell 0.6% on the day.
