Microsoft-backed (MSFT) OpenAI agents launched a cyberattack against software service RubyGems two months prior to targeting AI platform Hugging Face, The Wall Street Journal reported Friday, citing a coalition of AI researchers.

The May incident, nicknamed "GemStuffer" by researchers, flooded the coding service with spam files and forced operators to temporarily pause new account sign-ups, the news outlet reported.

The artificial intelligence agents attempted to exploit two security bugs, including an undisclosed zero-day vulnerability, to alter files belonging to other users, though the claim could not be verified by OpenAI, The Wall Street Journal quoted the researchers as saying.

Microsoft, OpenAI, RubyGems, and Hugging Face did not immediately respond to MT Newswires' request for comment.
