The 10-year Treasury yield has popped up above 5% for the second straight day. Many investors are probably wondering how long it might stay there.
If recent history is any guide, the answer is: not that long. The past eight times the Treasury yield closed above 5%, it went back down below that level in less than two months, according to Dow Jones Market Data. The average number of trading days it stayed above 5% was 12. All those stretches occurred in 2006 and 2007.
Longer periods of 10-year yields staying above 5% happened in 2002, 2001 and 1999-2000. Before September 1998, the 10-year yield was above 5% for more than two decades.
