Novo Nordisk is Dropping Some Weight. it Still Faces a Bigger Challenge.

Novo Nordisk is slimming down-and by shortening its brand name, the Danish drugmaker is signaling a new chapter as it aims to be more than a heavyweight in the market for GLP-1 medications.

The company announced Monday that it will now go by Novo, although its legal name remains Novo Nordisk. Rebranding to the shorthand long used by analysts and investors gives the Danish drugmaker a distinct, consistent identity to connect with stakeholders, the company said.

Alongside these changes, the drugmaker refreshed the central tenets of the "Novo Way" to focus more sharply on competitiveness, innovation, and integrity. Of course, these goals remain mere promises until Novo translates them into its daily operations.

The company is hardly floundering, as it remains one of two clear powerhouses in the weight-loss market, sharing an effective duopoly with Eli Lilly. However, it has struggled to diversify beyond its core offering of weight-loss drugs, and concerns persist around its ability to return to growth next year.

Novo's Wegovy and Ozempic, approved for chronic weight management and diabetes, respectively, continue to drive the bulk of its revenue. Meanwhile, attempts to find the next blockbuster have fallen short. Shares sank in July after Novo's anti-inflammatory drug candidate failed to reduce the risk of heart attacks and other major cardiovascular events in a late-stage trial.

Deutsche Bank analyst Emmanuel Papadakis cut his rating on the shares to Sell from Hold at the end of August, saying the drug was "effectively out of the picture" following the trial miss while flagging concerns over a major patent cliff in the coming years.

Even before then, pressure was mounting. In 2025, the company executed the largest corporate layoff in Denmark's history, paired with the termination of its chief executive and a major board shake-up.

Longtime company veteran and new CEO Mike Doustdar is trying to improve Novo's trajectory. Since assuming the company's top role last year, Doustdar has undertaken a cost-savings plan that included sweeping job cuts.

Under his direction, Novo captured a first-mover advantage in oral GLP-1s by launching a pill form of Wegovy, mirroring its earlier success as the first to bring an injectable to market. Despite the explosive popularity of oral Wegovy, many analysts believe Lilly has taken the lead in the weight-loss drug market.

While both stocks trail the benchmark S&P 500 in 2026, Novo's U.S.-listed shares have dropped over 14% while Lilly's have gained 6.3%, underscoring just how difficult it has become for Novo to tip the scales back in its favor.
