OTTAWA--Canadian farmers are set to produce more soybeans this year but less wheat and canola as growing conditions have been variable across the Prairies and the east.

Nationally, wheat production is forecast to fall 10.9% from last year to 36.1 million metric tons thanks to a 5.6% drop in the expected harvested area and lower anticipated yields, Statistics Canada said Wednesday.

The harvested area for wheat is projected to be about 24.8 million acres in 2026, while yields are forecast to decline 5.6% to 53.6 bushels an acre from record-high levels last year, the data agency said.

The pullback is expected to be led by weakness in spring wheat production. Wheat output in Saskatchewan is projected to fall 9.7%, while in Alberta wheat production is expected to be down 10.9%.

Canola production in the country is projected to edge down 0.8% to 22.1 million tons, with yields set to fall 8.3% to 41.8 bushels an acre despite an expected 8% rise in the harvested area at 23.2 million acres, which would be the highest on record.

National soybean output is estimated to increase 7.8% on-year to 7.5 million tons, with yields estimated to rise by 4.7% to 46.4 bushels an acre while the harvested area is anticipated to increase 3% to 5.9 million acres.

Corn for grain production is expected to increase 11.3% to 16.5 million tons for the year, Statistics Canada said.

Conditions across the Prairies have been variable throughout the growing season, the agency said. There has been lower-than-average precipitation in some areas, while parts of Western Canada have received above average precipitation. Provincial reports in Alberta have indicated that almost 60% of major crops were rated as being in good to excellent condition at the end of August, while lower rainfall in some parts of Saskatchewan later in the summer may have impacted crop development.

In Eastern Canada, temperatures generally have been below average to average throughout the growing season in much of Ontario, but above normal for most other eastern provinces. Rainfall has been above average in much of Ontario and western Quebec throughout the growing season, Statistics Canada said.

Data on final acreages for 2026 are scheduled to be released Dec. 4.
