OpenAI Reveals 6 'Concerning' Incidents. Why AI Stocks are Rising Anyway.

Remember when the artificial-intelligence slowdown was all the rage?

Three sessions on from a rough selloff for chip and memory stocks, investors have already got over the worst of their worries as they shrugged off six new instances of "concerning behavior" by models.

OpenAI said late Wednesday that the AI industry would not be able to "continue responsibly scaling at maximum speed for much longer," as it unveiled a new framework for tracking model misalignment.

The ChatGPT developer also disclosed six reports on "unexpected or concerning model behavior."

These weren't exactly AI doomsday scenarios. One report is about models concealing mistakes from users, while another describes an agent uploading a file to the internet so it could cite it.

AI stocks didn't react. In fact, shares of glassmaker Corning, optical networking companies Coherent and Lumentum, and chip maker Marvell were rising in Thursday's premarket. All four slumped on Monday after OpenAI CEO Sam Altman echoed calls for an AI slowdown.

The rally came as as investors opted to buy the dip, following a selloff on Wednesday that came after the Federal Reserve hiked interest rates for the first time in more than three years.

That suggests that Wall Street has already lost interest in potential AI deceleration, just three days after some worried it would tank the market.
