This Quantum Start-up Just Sold a Computer in an Untapped Market

Two months after its trading debut, IQM is forging its path into an untapped market with its first-ever quantum system sale in South America.

IQM on Wednesday unveiled a purchase agreement with Brazil's Eldorado Research Institute. The deployment of a quantum computer in the first quarter of 2027 marks the company's entry into a region largely left behind as the technology spreads across the U.S., Europe, and Asia.

IQM considers itself an early entrant into a potentially dynamic market. "Brazil has the talent, the research base and the ambition to build a real quantum ecosystem," CEO Jan Goetz said. "What has been missing is direct access to real quantum computers."

The IQM Spark computer will be installed at Eldorado's headquarters in São Paulo. The state is considered Brazil's largest technology cluster, home to more than half of the country's start-ups and corporate offices for the likes of Microsoft and Alphabet-owned Google.

Researchers, industry partners, and educational institutions also will have remote access to IQM's cloud-based system in Europe, allowing them to develop applications on their own hardware and transition to larger-scale quantum workloads when necessary.

Ask any industry expert and they say that quantum remains in the early stages of commercialization. Enterprise customers have yet to adopt the technology broadly as the advent of larger, error-corrected systems remains several years away. Most demonstrations of quantum speed-ups over classical computers have been relatively small-scale and restricted to research settings.

However, IQM has established an early lead in on-premises system sales. The company has 26 sales under its belt and 17 deliveries to date, putting it ahead of industry peers like International Business Machines.

Wider takeup will only occur once customers are confident that quantum can deliver real cost savings. While the industry remains too speculative for most investors, system sales serve as an encouraging sign of commercial traction that further validates the technology.

IQM went public through a blank-check merger in early July, culminating in a dual listing in Helsinki. The Finnish flag-bearer is the first European quantum company to list on a major U.S. stock exchange.
