Humanity is "losing control" of artificial intelligence and needs guardrails similar to nuclear arms controls, AFP reported Wednesday, citing an interview with Canadian computer scientist Yoshua Bengio.

Bengio, a University of Montreal professor and 2018 Turing Award winner, told AFP that "there's a reason that companies are saying this is going too fast, that we're losing control," adding that security discussions around AI have not been adequately robust, the report said.

He pointed to an incident disclosed by OpenAI in which a swarm of autonomous AI agents carried out an unauthorized breach of the open-source platform Hugging Face in July, calling such autonomous action the central threat and warning of AI agents that could "get through cybersecurity barriers and enter any company," according to the report.

Yoshua Bengio did not immediately respond to a request for comment from MT Newswires.
