BHP Group (ASX:BHP) and Amazon established a pilot to buy and sell credits for lower greenhouse gas emissions associated with the production of copper concentrate and cathodes at Escondida mine in Chile, an industry first, according to a Tuesday statement from the mining giant.

The pilot seeks to demonstrate a potential industry framework to purchase Environmental Attribute Certificates (EACs), which are only applied to emissions within copper supply chains, BHP said. The EACs are created by copper producers and sold to downstream users, who can then retire these EACs against the greenhouse gas emissions of copper in their supply chain.

Under the pilot, Amazon can retire the EACs against the copper it uses in power, cooling, and compute infrastructure, the miner added.
