HP Expecting Industry-Wide PC Volumes to Decline in 2027

HP said it is planning for industry-wide personal computer unit volumes to fall by roughly mid-single digits next year.

The company disclosed its expectation in a Monday filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, after telling investors last month that it would be premature to provide specifics on its outlook for fiscal year 2027.

Though the company isn't yet providing guidance for fiscal 2027, it said that its preliminary assumption is for a decline in PC unit sales in calendar year 2027, which it added was consistent with third-party forecasts. HP also said the assumption depends on market performance for the rest of this year.

HP's disclosure comes as a shortage of memory chips and soaring costs have forced it and other PC makers to sell fewer laptops at much higher prices.

International Data Corp. has estimated that worldwide PC shipments fell 4.9% in the second quarter of this year, forecasting further declines in 2027. Prices, meanwhile, are expected to rise 20% across the industry this year, according to IDC.

The changing market hasn't yet impacted HP's top line. The company in August reported revenue from its personal systems segment rising 18% year-over-year despite a 16% decline in units sold, buoyed by a growing focus on premium-priced computers optimized for artificial-intelligence workloads.
