Oil Heads for Longest Stretch of Daily Declines Since June

Brent crude-oil futures are on track for their longest run of losses in about three months, extending their decline to a fourth straight session this morning.

-- Brent crude futures are down more than 3% in early trading at around $100.50 a barrel.

-- Brent got as high as $109.80 last Monday. Despite the losses since then, the oil benchmark remains up about 11% month-to-date.

-- The last time that Brent fell for four straight sessions was mid-June.

Oil's decline today is notable given the threats traded by Washington and Tehran over the weekend. But traders are also looking ahead to this week's gathering of global leaders in New York for the United Nations General Assembly. Over the weekend, President Trump told Fox News that he is "probably" open to meeting with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian during the event.

Trump's meeting this week with Chinese leader Xi Jinping will be closely watched, though it isn't clear to what extent the war with Iran will be discussed. At the Brics summit earlier this month-a gathering of emerging-market nations-Xi indicated that China and other member nations should strive to put an end to conflicts, noting that the conflict in the Middle East is "against the common interests of the international community."

Meanwhile, remarks over the weekend from Brad Cooper, head of the U.S. Central Command, are likely further weighing on oil prices. He said in a video message that the volume of oil, natural gas and cargo transiting the Strait of Hormuz in the past two weeks was the highest it's been in six months.
