Eli Lilly has won U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval for Onswik, a once-weekly basal insulin injection treatment for adults with type 2 diabetes.

Eli Lilly on Thursday said Onswik is designed to deliver steady basal insulin levels over seven days, eliminating the need for more than 300 injections a year compared to once-daily basal insulin.

The Indianapolis drugmaker said the Onswik KwikPen will be available in the U.S. in the coming months.

Onswik was previously approved for adults with type 2 diabetes in Europe, Mexico and Japan.
