Stock indexes are trading lower this morning, led by the Nasdaq, as higher oil prices and bond yields continue to set a negative tone for stocks.
Here's what's moving markets today:
-- Tech shifts: Nvidia and Meta Platforms are making news today in tech, launching a big share buyback plan and a business focused on selling AI tools respectively. Overall, tech stocks are lower, but Nvidia is bucking the trend thanks to the stock buyback.
-- Yields keep rising: Treasury yields are surging again Monday, following a big move up last week as concern about inflation and an overheating economy build. The 30-year U.S. government bond has moved up to 5.58%, not far from its May 2004 high of 5.591%. The 2-year has been moving up even faster of late as the yield curve flattens.
-- Oil prices are up. especially if you need it now: Normally, the gap between prices for two consecutive monthly crude contracts is only a couple of dollars, at most. But the gap has been widening recently. This morning, the November contract is more than $7 a barrel above the December contract, signaling a scramble to get hold of oil as soon as possible.
