Amazon MGM Studios overpowered Tom Cruise's latest film as Verity, the R-rated crime thriller starring Anne Hathaway and Dakota Johnson, won the weekend domestic box office.
Verity, a crime drama and mystery thriller, sold an estimated $32.6 million in North American tickets through Sunday, according to Rentrak. It sold more tickets than the next two movies combined: Resident Evil and Heart of the Beast.
Meanwhile, Digger, Warner Bros. Studio's dark comedy starring Tom Cruise, took in a lower-than-expected $8 million at the domestic box office. Directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu and made for about $125 million, the movie is about the most powerful man in the world's frantic mission to prove he is humanity's savior before the disaster he has unleashed destroys everything. It's the studio's final release before its acquisition by Paramount closes on Tuesday.
For Hollywood's film industry, this weekend continued to push box office sales well above 2025 levels. This weekend's estimated $99 million in overall domestic box office is down 21% from the last weekend in September but 14.8% higher than the comparable weekend last year, Rentrak's head of marketplace trends Paul Dergarabedian said.
Dergarabedian notes there have been 27 $100-million-plus weekends this year out of the first 40 weekends, "meaning 67.5% of all weekends have reached that mark."
Domestic box office ticket totals for the industry through Sunday were an estimated $7.949 billion, 19.4% higher than the $6.654 billion at this point in 2025, according to Rentrak. That's only about $50.8 million below the $8 billion mark, which studios and movie theaters are expected to reach around Oct. 9, depending on weekday grosses, Dergarabedian said.
September 2026 generated about $601.9 million in domestic box office, up 1.3% from last September and ranking as the seventh highest-grossing September on record, he said. That's after a record $4.77 billion summer movie season, with four straight months of $1 billion in box office.
For comparison, the 2025 box office didn't hit $8 billion until December, Eric Handler, senior media and entertainment analyst for Roth, wrote on Sept. 28.
Not only is the year-to-date box office up 20% from the same point in 2025, it is up 11% from 2023, Hollywood's highest year after the pandemic.
That's primarily because of two movies: Sony's Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which sold another $2.45 million this weekend and has now surpassed $955.5 million to become the highest grossing domestic release of all time. And Universal Pictures' The Odyssey, with $620.5 million, which is now the highest grossing R-rated movie ever.
Verity is Anne Hathaway's fifth theatrical release this year and cements her status as one of the year's "true box office superstars," Dergarabedian said. Her previous four films, including The Odyssey and Walt Disney's The Devil Wears Prada 2 at $220.6 million, have collectively sold nearly $900 million domestically and more than $2.55 billion worldwide, according to Rentrak.
Resident Evil, the horror movie distributed by Sony's Columbia Pictures, sold $12.5 million in its third weekend. That brings its domestic total to $124.9 million.
Paramount's Heart of the Beast, starring Brad Pitt as Special Forces veteran James Belmont fighting to survive with his combat dog in the Alaskan wilderness, sold $11 million in its second weekend, bringing its domestic total to $38.4 million. Primetime's $8 million in revenue this weekend brings its domestic total to $34.1 million.
