JPMorgan Chase & Co. (NYSE:JPM) stock edged lower in Tuesday’s premarket trading after the banking giant reported weaker-than-expected third-quarter earnings and revenue.

The bank missed profit expectations as market uncertainty weighed on dealmaking and bond trading, marking its first quarterly earnings shortfall in nearly three years, Reuters reported.

Earnings and Revenue Miss Estimates

JPMorgan reported adjusted earnings of $5.75 per share, missing the consensus estimate of $5.90.

Managed revenue rose 8% year over year to $50.91 billion, below analysts’ expectations of $51.26 billion.

Reported net income increased 6% to $15.3 billion, or $5.57 per share. Results included $658 million in pretax investment securities losses, reducing earnings by 18 cents per share.

Net interest income rose 13% to $27.1 billion, while noninterest revenue increased 3% to $23.8 billion.

Operating expenses climbed 12% to $27.3 billion, while provisions for credit losses fell 19% to $2.7 billion.

Consumer Banking and Trading Drive Growth

Consumer and Community Banking revenue rose 9% to $21.2 billion. Banking and Wealth Management revenue increased 6%, supported by higher asset management fees at J.P. Morgan Wealth Management and increased net interest income from higher deposit balances.

Average consumer banking deposits grew 4%, while loans increased 2%. Debit and credit card sales volume rose 10%, and active mobile customers increased 7%.

JPMorgan retained its position as the leading U.S. retail deposit bank for the sixth consecutive year. It also added more than 650,000 net new checking accounts.

Commercial and Investment Bank revenue climbed 14% to $22.7 billion. Investment banking fees rose 14%, while markets revenue increased 15%.

Equity markets revenue jumped 49%, partially offset by a 4% decline in fixed-income markets revenue. Average Banking and Payments loans rose 11%, while average client deposits increased 10%.

Asset and Wealth Management revenue grew 14%, supported by $263 billion in net client asset inflows. Assets under management reached $5.2 trillion, up 13%, while average loans increased 20%.

Management Sees Strong Consumer Spending

During Tuesday’s earnings call, Chief Financial Officer Jeremy Barnum said underlying consumer spending remained robust.

Barnum described the investment banking pipeline as strong despite a slowdown in the second half of September. He said deals were more likely to be delayed than canceled, while broader market conditions remained supportive.

However, he cautioned that the gap between buyers and sellers in capital markets could temporarily widen before settling at a new level.

CEO Jamie Dimon said strong business investment and consumer spending continued to support the U.S. economy.

However, he warned that large fiscal deficits, persistent inflation, elevated asset prices, rising interest rates and geopolitical uncertainty posed risks, prompting the bank to prepare for a range of economic outcomes.

Dimon also said JPMorgan reduced share repurchases to prioritize business investment and client support. He expressed confidence that the bank could deploy capital over time to generate attractive shareholder returns.

The bank repurchased $664 million in common stock during the quarter.

JPMorgan Raises 2026 Interest Income Outlook

JPMorgan raised its 2026 net interest income forecast to approximately $106.2 billion from $105.5 billion previously.

The bank also increased its full-year net interest income outlook excluding Markets to $97.2 billion from $96.5 billion.

For the fourth quarter, JPMorgan expects net interest income excluding Markets of approximately $25.5 billion.

Average firmwide loans increased 10% year over year to $1.6 trillion, while average deposits rose 8% to $2.7 trillion.

JPMorgan ended the quarter with a standardized Common Equity Tier 1 capital ratio of 13.9%, down from 14.8% a year earlier.

The bank increased its quarterly dividend to $1.65 per share from $1.50 in the second quarter.

JPM Price Action: JPMorgan Chase shares were down 0.39% at $333.00 during premarket trading on Tuesday, according to Benzinga Pro data.
