Alphabet unveiled its Pixel 11 series on Tuesday, opting for a more conservative approach during the critical holiday season when competitors like Apple and Samsung are capturing attention with innovative folding designs. The entire Pixel 11 lineup now starts at $100 more than its predecessor.

Due to a shortage in memory supply, costs have been passed to consumers. The flagship Pixel 11 Pro XL starts at $1,299, the standard Pixel 11 at $899, and the foldable Pixel 11 Pro Fold at $1,899. To manage costs, Alphabet has reduced the base RAM on the Pixel 11 Pro and Pro XL from 16GB to 12GB, though base storage has increased from 128GB to 256GB. Pre-orders begin Wednesday.

Alphabet stated, "The tech industry is currently facing a severe, supplier-driven RAM shortage. We are adjusting Pixel 11 pricing and RAM configurations to deliver the best value for customers under these circumstances." The company says it is actively working on engineering solutions to address this challenge.

Alongside the phones, Alphabet also launched the Pixel Watch 5, featuring new insulin resistance and blood pressure trend tracking, and the Pixel Tag, a tracking accessory similar to Apple's AirTag. On Wednesday, Alphabet's stock opened higher but fell, trading down 0.36% during the session.


Design Stays the Same for the Third Year, as Rivals Offer Fresh Looks

For the third consecutive year, Alphabet's high-end models maintain nearly identical designs, with no significant changes to the full-glass camera bar or overall silhouette. This strategy faces pressure in the increasingly competitive fall market. Apple's Pro iPhones received a major redesign only last year, and the upcoming iPhone 18 series will still be a second-generation iteration of that design, which feels relatively fresh to consumers. Samsung's Galaxy S26 Ultra features a unique privacy screen to prevent onlookers from viewing the display.

In the foldable space, Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 8 adopts a passport-style wide-screen form, and Apple's upcoming foldable iPhone is expected to follow a similar design. Meanwhile, the Pixel 11 Pro Fold sticks to a traditional tall, narrow folding shape, which has lost momentum in current market discussions.


Camera and AI Features Get Targeted Upgrades

On the hardware front, the Pixel 11 Pro and Pro XL feature a new 50-megapixel main sensor that captures more detail than the Pixel 10 Pro, and a 32% increase in light intake for the telephoto lens. Alphabet touts a "120x zoom" capability, but acknowledges it heavily relies on digital enhancement and AI processing, not optical zoom. The standard Pixel 11 includes a 48-megapixel main camera with 56% better light sensitivity, a 6.3-inch 120Hz screen with a peak brightness of 3,000 nits, and a claimed battery life of up to 30 hours. The Pro series' screen peak brightness increases from 3,300 nits to 3,600 nits, and the cover glass offers double the scratch resistance. For AI, the Gemini assistant can now automate tasks like ordering food, booking rides, and buying tickets across apps, and can make calls on behalf of the user. The new "Rambler" voice-to-text feature removes filler words and organizes speech logic. The "Magic Capture" mode records video and saves multiple photos simultaneously with a single tap.


Market to Test the Practicality of the HiLight Feature

The Pixel 11 Pro series exclusively debuts the "HiLight" feature, which transforms the camera flash area into an ambient LED notification indicator. It can glow in different colors for specific contacts and pulse to show AI status during Gemini voice interactions. This concept isn't new, as brands like Nothing Technology have already implemented larger, more prominent LED features on their phones. In comparison, HiLight is a small circle near the flash, and its visibility in real-world use remains to be tested.


Foldable Version Seeks to Differentiate with Thinness and Durability

The Pixel 11 Pro Fold is 1 millimeter thinner and nearly 10% lighter than its predecessor, with 20% brighter internal and external screens. It retains an IP68 dust and water resistance rating, which is a significant advantage over Samsung's recently released Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra for outdoor use. However, Alphabet's choice of foldable design is diverging from market trends. After experimenting with a passport-style wide screen on the original Pixel Fold, it has now shifted to a tall, narrow form. Meanwhile, Samsung and Apple are moving toward the passport-style design, drawing more consumer attention and social media buzz.
