Former Meta executive and UK's former Deputy Prime Minister, Nick Clegg, warned on Wednesday that the likelihood of a market correction in the artificial intelligence sector is 「quite high,」 expressing skepticism about the concept of artificial superintelligence. Clegg, who previously held the role of global affairs chief at the American tech giant Meta, stated that the boom in artificial intelligence has led to 「incredible and crazy valuations.」 「Trades are happening almost every day, every hour,」 Clegg remarked. He added, 「You have to think, oh, this could lead to a correction,」 noting that the probability of such an occurrence is 「quite high.」 A bubble is generally defined as an overvaluation in private or public markets, where a company's price does not align with its fundamentals. Clegg emphasized that the key to any correction lies in whether the large-scale enterprises—「which are investing hundreds of billions building these data centers」—can recover their infrastructure investments and demonstrate that their business models are sustainable. 「This will certainly raise some issues,」 he remarked, adding, 「the fundamental paradigm on which the entire industry is built, namely the so-called large language model AI paradigm, is also at stake.」 Superintelligence vs. Utility Clegg noted that this 「paradigm」 aims for artificial superintelligence, often defined as AI surpassing human intelligence—a goal generally viewed as the 「holy grail」—rather than artificial general intelligence, which involves AI systems possessing human-level capabilities. Many prominent tech giants and investors support the idea of artificial superintelligence, including SoftBank founder Masayoshi Son and Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, the latter of whom established an AI lab earlier this year to explore this technology. Clegg further stated, 「I believe there are limitations to probabilistic AI technology, which means it may not perform as dramatically as people imagine. But that does not mean that the technology itself won't endure, thrive, and create significant impact.」
