A San Francisco-based robotics startup has begun offering home cleaning services performed by humanoid robots, as revealed by its chief executive officer. Tau Robotics CEO and co-founder Alex Koch stated, "Yes, we announced yesterday that we are launching a humanoid robot cleaning service in San Francisco." The company is providing this service to a select group of applicants in the city at a rate of $30 per hour.

Koch explained that part of the initiative's goal is to make home cleaning more accessible to a broader audience. "I believe many of our initial clients either did not previously hire housekeeping staff or rarely used professional cleaning services. This service is primarily about expanding the market," Koch said.

Koch noted that current artificial intelligence technology cannot yet fully control humanoid robots independently. The actual operational model involves workers remotely controlling the robots from a central station, with AI providing assistance. Tau Robotics has released a video showcasing the humanoid robot performing cleaning tasks, with one accelerated clip showing the robot exiting a van before starting its work.

Not everyone is convinced that the technology is ready for widespread deployment. Ken Goldberg, an engineering professor at the University of California, Berkeley, with 40 years of experience in the field, expressed skepticism about the humanoid robot's ability to clean homes. "I really think it's too early for this," Goldberg said. "I would be very surprised if these robots could complete a truly useful whole-house cleaning. Picking up items from the floor remains a major challenge for robots today. Tasks like sweeping, wiping countertops, and cleaning under furniture are extremely difficult."

Koch acknowledged the technological limitations but stated that the robots can already handle some household chores. "For example, vacuuming is working quite well now. Additionally, basic tasks like wiping down kitchen countertops are largely achievable," Koch said.

Goldberg also questioned the recorded video showcasing the robot's performance. "You don't know if the video has been sped up, whether there is human intervention behind the scenes, or if the environment was carefully arranged to make the robot complete that one demonstration," Goldberg said.

Despite widespread doubts about current technical capabilities, the development prospects and existing challenges of the humanoid robot industry are both prominent. The long-term goal is to create humanoid robots capable of completing a full home cleaning at a low cost, potentially lowering the barrier to using home cleaning services.
