A subsidiary of South Korean light-emitting diode (LED) manufacturer Seoul Semiconductor, Seoul Viosys, has achieved a legal win in India, enabling it to block the sale of products that infringe on its optoelectronic semiconductor technology. This follows similar legal successes the company has already secured in the United States and Europe.

Seoul Viosys announced on Wednesday that the Delhi High Court has prohibited Indian renewable energy company Ornate Agencies from marketing these infringing products. Additionally, a permanent injunction was issued against the company's managing director. According to company officials, the court's preliminary ruling was issued on July 17 and was subsequently confirmed on July 31.

The company stated that prior to this decision, the Unified Patent Court in Europe and a US court had issued similar rulings favorable to the South Korean LED manufacturer, in June of last year and February of this year, respectively.

Seoul Viosys noted that as the industry expands its operations from automotive lighting and displays into artificial intelligence applications, this series of rulings could have a significant impact on the global optoelectronic semiconductor market, which is estimated to be worth approximately $200 billion. The company indicated that the infringed technologies include Seoul Semiconductor's patented solutions related to enhanced light output, leadless WICOP chip packaging, and water purification. It added that Seoul Semiconductor and Seoul Viosys currently hold approximately 15,000 and 6,000 patents, respectively.
