U.S. Job Market Maintains Resilience with Low Weekly Jobless Claims, Markets Eye July Nonfarm Payrolls Report

Where to begin

U.S. initial jobless claims held steady for the third consecutive week, remaining below 200,000, underscoring the resilience of the labor market. Data released by the U.S. Department of Labor on Thursday showed that initial claims for the week ending August 1 edged up to 199,000, slightly below the market consensus of 202,000. Continuing claims for the week ending July 25 stood at 1.801 million, above the prior week's 1.782 million and the market forecast of 1.79 million. The four-week moving average of initial claims for the week ending August 1 dropped to 198,800, the lowest level since September 2022.

After a rise in late May and early June, initial jobless claims have retreated. Economists largely view the earlier increase as noise. Despite a significant slowdown in June nonfarm payroll growth and downward revisions to April and May figures, economists note that the labor market has not undergone a substantial change, remaining in a "slow hiring, slow firing" state.

Currently, market attention has shifted to the U.S. July nonfarm payrolls report, set for release on Friday. The market consensus anticipates new nonfarm payroll additions of 83,000 for July, with the unemployment rate expected to hold steady at 4.2%. The strength of this latest employment data will influence whether the Federal Reserve maintains its current stance or proceeds with a rate hike in September.

Why focusing on the 10 ASX 200 shares matters

Notably, on Wednesday evening, the U.S. July ADP employment data was released first, showing a private sector increase of only 44,000 jobs, far below the market expectation of 70,000. The prior month's figure was also revised downward from 98,000 to 95,000. As a "small nonfarm" indicator, ADP data is often viewed as a precursor to nonfarm payrolls. The sharp miss in July ADP data has heightened market expectations of a cooling jobs market.

Despite the slowdown in hiring, the ADP report indicated that salary growth for job-switchers accelerated to its highest level in nearly a year. Supported by strong corporate and consumer demand, the U.S. labor market remains stable. If the July nonfarm payrolls report confirms this trend, the recent employment trajectory suggests that Fed officials can continue to focus on inflation, which remains elevated.
