During the Xiaomi Pengcheng Technology Conference on the evening of July 30, Xiaomi Group founder, chairman, and CEO Lei Jun delivered a speech.
He noted that over the past five years of Xiaomi's automotive journey, friends have frequently asked when the company would release a large SUV. In reality, there are already dozens of 9-series large SUVs on the market, with features like TVs, refrigerators, and large sofas becoming standard. So why is there still such anticipation?
Xiaomi engaged with many 9-series SUV owners and discovered numerous pain points. For example, a three-person household traveling with both sets of grandparents totals seven people, making a six-seat configuration insufficient. Families with two children often find six seats inadequate when bringing relatives or colleagues for lunch. Additionally, large seven-seat SUVs, while accommodating six or seven passengers, typically lack space for luggage.
Lei Jun explained that Xiaomi's vision is to build a "mobile home"—a vehicle with an SUV's exterior, driving dynamics, and off-road capability, yet offering the spaciousness and layout flexibility of an RV. Based on this concept, the company spent three and a half years developing a new platform architecture called the Xiaomi Kunlun Technology Architecture, which includes the Xiaomi Kunlun Platform, Xiaomi Kunlun Super Range Extender, and Xiaomi Kunlun All-Domain Safety systems.
