Lululemon's Rain-Soaked Shanghai Yoga Event Sparks Backlash Over Poor Planning

Deep News
06/20

Recent news highlights a major public relations misstep for athletic apparel brand Lululemon Athletica. The company organized a large-scale yoga festival on Shanghai's North Bund, which reportedly attracted close to 1,300 participants. The event, however, was disrupted by a sudden downpour, and criticism has mounted due to the brand's apparent lack of contingency plans for adverse weather, leaving attendees to practice yoga in the rain.

On social media, participants who attended the event have voiced strong dissatisfaction. One post read, "I will never attend a Lulu event again. The yoga mats were wet, there was nowhere to put our things, we couldn't fully extend our arms, the event started 20 minutes late, and you'd get scolded for speaking. After all, what can you expect from a free event?" Another fan criticized the organization, stating, "No rain plan? What an amateur operation," while others expressed shock at the situation.

Furthermore, some observers have pointed out that after images of the scene—showing a thousand people doing yoga in the rain on the Shanghai Bund—circulated online, the composition and formation were seen as highly reminiscent of a scene from the film "The Pig, the Snake and the Pigeon," creating a dissonant and uncomfortable viewing experience.

As of the latest updates, Lululemon Athletica has not issued an official public response to the incident. A customer service representative from the brand's official flagship store stated, "We sincerely apologize and have recorded the situation you reported."

Recent Controversies Extend Beyond This Event

It is worth noting that this is not the only recent controversy facing Lululemon. The brand recently held an event at the Great Wall where its brand ambassador, Zhu Yilong, was criticized for performing with a drum identified by some as a Japanese drum.

On the 16th, Lululemon released a statement apologizing, saying, "The Great Wall yoga event was always intended to pay tribute to Chinese culture. We take feedback from all sectors of society very seriously. Due to limitations in our relevant professional knowledge, we failed to fully identify potential controversies in the early stages and have fully recognized that we should have been more careful and thorough in the planning and review process for the drum performance. We hereby offer our sincere apologies to the public and to Mr. Zhu Yilong and have taken down all related promotional content."
