Haidian District in Beijing Accelerates Development as a Brain-Computer Interface Hub, Housing Nearly 60% of Core Companies Nationwide

The Zhongguancun Science City Management Committee recently disclosed that Haidian District in Beijing has gathered over 30 core brain-computer interface (BCI) companies, accounting for nearly 60% of the national total. A full-chain innovation ecosystem spanning "basic research, technological breakthroughs, product development, and clinical application" has been established, with a new BCI hub rapidly emerging.

Pioneering breakthroughs aim to help blind individuals "see" the world. By connecting a BCI to the human brain, completely blind patients could potentially regain their sight. In Haidian, an innovative invasive BCI company founded by several young scientists is exploring how to turn this vision into reality. The team has proposed a "10,000-channel neural graphics card" concept, seeking to re-render neural activity in the visual cortex for those who have lost peripheral nerve input. This would convert the external world into neural stimulation language that the brain can comprehend, using a high-precision, 10,000-channel neural stimulation chip to write images, colors, boundaries, and spatial structures into consciousness. The team stated that they completed a nearly 100 million yuan seed funding round a month ago and expect to finish prototype development by the end of this year.

A comprehensive BCI industrial ecosystem covering the "technology, product, and application" chain is taking shape in Haidian. The application radius is expanding as concepts enter daily life. By wearing a headset with over a dozen "tentacles" that resembles traditional headphones, brainwaves can be captured in real-time and converted into quantifiable data. From focus, excitement, and relaxation levels to stress degrees, every second of the brain's neural activity becomes "visible." The related company stated that such head-mounted BCI devices not only help individual users monitor brain health and engage in "brain gym" training but also convert raw EEG data into interpretable metrics for detecting diseases like Alzheimer's and enabling external device control for ALS patients. Several months ago, this tech company, headquartered in Silicon Valley with operations spanning over 140 countries, chose to officially enter China, with its first physical entity in the country landing in Haidian.

From medical rehabilitation to commercial consumption, and from laboratory research tools to everyday health monitoring devices for the general public, the application scope of BCI technology is continuously broadening. Setting a benchmark for the BCI industry, Haidian has already taken a leading position in this field, which is one of the key directions for China's future industrial development during the "15th Five-Year Plan" period. In July, Haidian District released a BCI industry development plan and simultaneously launched three major public service platforms focusing on brain-inspired AI algorithms, full-chain testing and verification, and clinical translation services. These efforts are solidifying the software and hardware foundation for the district's BCI industry. The Zhongguancun (Haidian) BCI Industry Cluster Zone, officially unveiled at the 2026 Zhongguancun Forum Annual Conference, has already attracted over 20 BCI projects and established an AI+BCI standard testing and verification laboratory.

In the next phase, the cluster zone will focus on integrating AI and BCI innovation, targeting projects across the entire track, including neural medicine, industrial safety, rehabilitation equipment, flexible electrodes, and brain data platforms, to create a globally competitive BCI industry innovation cluster. A Zhongguancun Science City Management Committee official stated that during the "15th Five-Year Plan" period, Haidian will also promote the construction of a BCI Clinical Translation Industry Innovation Center. Leveraging a global future medical and health industry incubation platform and supporting special funds, the district aims to accelerate technological breakthroughs, clinical validation, and product launches for invasive and semi-invasive BCI technologies. It will also promote the large-scale application and scenario expansion of non-invasive BCI technology, striving to become a new global benchmark for BCI industry innovation and development.
