Aligning University Programs with National Strategic Demands through Innovative Talent Development

Tianjin is advancing the integration of education, science, and technology with talent development by dynamically adjusting its academic programs to meet critical national needs. This summer, multiple universities are revising their talent cultivation plans to align with new majors.

The national "15th Five-Year Plan" outlines the need to push forward key technological innovations, such as new energy storage, and positions it as a core pillar of the new energy system. To cultivate talent for this industry, Tianjin University is leveraging the country's first national-level platform for industry-education integration in energy storage technology. It has established the School of Energy, which will enroll its first cohort of undergraduates in Energy Storage Science and Engineering this autumn.

Following the new engineering education reform requirements, the School of Energy has consolidated its dispersed faculty, experimental platforms, and research capabilities. This unified approach targets the urgent industrial needs of national energy security, the dual-carbon strategy, and new energy storage, achieving an integrated layout of education, technology, and talent. This summer, over 200 teachers selected from various colleges have completed the team formation. Professor Xue Lingxiao, who is in charge of curriculum design, presented the latest course schedule. Different colors represent different disciplines, with cross-disciplinary training for composite talents being the key feature.

To match industry demands, the school has incorporated partner enterprises into the talent cultivation model, allowing students to enter companies early and understand industrial needs. Consequently, this summer, the school has connected with leading enterprises like the Zhongguancun Energy Storage Industry Technology Alliance, CATL, and Wotai Energy to collect internship positions offered by companies. Upon enrollment, first-year students will select their internship units, participate in front-line work, and have their completed defense assessments count towards their credits.

Addressing major national needs, over ten universities in Tianjin received approval from the Ministry of Education to establish new majors in the first half of this year. Tianjin University has leveraged its leading role in new engineering construction to add the country's first undergraduate programs in Brain-Computer Science and Technology, as well as Synthetic Biology. Tianjin Chengjian University has added a major in Smart Materials and Structures, focusing on talent development for new materials in urban construction. Tiangong University has added a new major in Pharmacy. These new programs will welcome their first students next month.

To deeply implement the "Strategy of Revitalizing the City through Science, Education, and Talent," Tianjin is not only expanding the scope of new engineering education reform this year but also simultaneously initiating reforms in "New Liberal Arts, New Medicine, and New Arts." These reforms are aimed at the service needs of fields like technology finance, human resources, and medical care for the elderly, reshaping the discipline and program structures, curriculum systems, and models of industry-education integration. Nankai University, leveraging its strengths in finance, has added a new professional master's degree program in Technology Transfer.
