Italy's Industrial Output Takes Unexpected Steep Dive in June, Clouding Outlook for Eurozone's Third-Largest Economy

Italy's industrial production suffered a sharp 1.0% month-over-month decline in June, according to data released Thursday by the Italian National Institute of Statistics (ISTAT). This performance fell well short of market expectations, casting a shadow over the recovery prospects of the eurozone's third-largest economy.

A survey of 13 analysts had anticipated a 0.3% monthly increase for June, reversing the 0.3% drop seen in May. However, the actual 1.0% decrease came as a significant surprise to the market. On an adjusted year-over-year basis, industrial output fell 0.6% in June, also far below the expected 1.0% increase.

Despite the setback in June, Italy's overall industrial output for the second quarter posted a 0.4% quarterly gain, successfully reversing the 0.3% contraction seen in the first quarter. At the macroeconomic level, the Italian economy performed better in the first half of the year than many analysts had initially predicted. After growing 0.3% in the first quarter, the GDP posted a modest 0.2% increase in the second quarter.

For the full year 2026, the government of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni had forecast a GDP growth rate of 0.6% in April. However, the Italian Budget Monitoring Office (UPB) issued a more optimistic forecast on Tuesday, raising its annual growth estimate to 0.9%. In historical context, Italy's economy grew by 0.5% in 2025, marking the third consecutive year of growth below 1%.
