Natural Gas Output Tops 1 Billion Cubic Meters at Tianshan Gas Field

On March 18, the Tianshan Gas Field, located on the southern edge of Xinjiang's Junggar Basin, achieved a cumulative industrial natural gas production exceeding 1 billion cubic meters. This milestone highlights breakthroughs in China's technology for developing ultra-deep, ultra-high-pressure complex gas reservoirs, strengthening the country's energy security and supporting residential gas supply. The Tianshan Gas Field, which began development in February 2021, lies at a depth of over 7,000 meters with a formation pressure coefficient above 2.0, making it a typical ultra-deep, ultra-high-pressure clastic rock condensate gas field. Its complex geological structure and tight reservoir presented significant development challenges, with no mature prior experience available for reference. In recent years, China has intensified efforts in natural gas exploration and production to boost reserves and output. As a key block for ultra-deep complex gas reservoir development in the southern Junggar Basin, the Tianshan Gas Field adopted an integrated exploration and development model. This approach enabled rapid commissioning of high-yield gas wells such as Hutian 1 and Tianwan 1, along with supporting facilities including LNG plants and natural gas processing stations, forming a complete production and treatment system. These steps lay a foundation for future large-scale natural gas production. By 2026, the gas field is expected to commission eight new gas wells, doubling its daily output to 3.4 million cubic meters.
