AI Model Claude Targeted in State-Linked Misuse Attempts, Anthropic Reveals

Anthropic PBC has disclosed that its artificial intelligence model, Claude, is being exploited by malicious actors attempting to develop various potential military applications, including suicide drone swarms, missile navigation systems, and biological weapons. The company's threat intelligence unit published a report on Thursday indicating that users flagged for abusing its frontier models over the past year hail from nations such as Iran, Russia, China, and Yemen. Notably, none of these incidents involved Anthropic's most advanced models, Fable and Mythos.

The report emphasizes that as model sophistication grows, the associated risks will rise unless AI developers and societal safeguards take proactive measures to enhance security. American AI firms are locked in a competitive race to build and deploy increasingly powerful systems, partly to outpace rivals like China, while simultaneously striving to uphold protective measures.

Anthropic is actively working to prevent its technology from being leveraged for harmful ends, including the development of biological and conventional weapons. This stance has placed the company in direct conflict with the Pentagon, which recently suspended collaboration with Anthropic after the firm refused to allow Claude to be used for mass surveillance or autonomous weapons systems. The report further notes that some users attempted to employ Claude to assist adversaries of the United States, with many cases involving efforts to circumvent Claude's safety barriers or conceal their geographic locations.
