Soviet Area Residents Went Hungry to Back the Red Army, Village Beggar Donated 60 Jin of Rice

In September 15, 1933, the Provisional Central Government of the Chinese Soviet Republic ruled that mobile Red Army units on the march could borrow grain from residents in Soviet areas using temporary grain loan notes, giving rise to loan certificates backed by the credibility of the red regime.

Luo Wensen, a retired official from Litian Township in Sanming, Fujian Province, has carefully kept one such grain loan certificate. He recalled that locals gave everything they had to support the Red Army, donating pigs, sheep, and grain, whatever they could spare.

There was a beggar in the township nicknamed "the beggar chief" who, despite living by begging, still contributed 60 jin of rice to the Red Army. "To uphold the red regime, they would rather go hungry themselves."

These grain loan certificates stand as testimony to the deep, life-and-death trust between the people of the Soviet areas and the Red Army.
