On August 24, PDD Holdings Inc released its unaudited second-quarter results for fiscal 2026, covering the period ending June 30. The company generated 112.36 billion yuan in quarterly revenue, marking an 8% year-on-year increase, with transaction services revenue rising 13% to 54.7 billion yuan, serving as the primary engine for top-line growth.

Profit metrics presented a mixed picture during the quarter. Operating profit expanded 8% year-on-year to 27.8 billion yuan, yet net income attributable to ordinary shareholders slipped 12% to 27.2 billion yuan, while Non-GAAP net income declined 13% to 28.5 billion yuan. The earnings pressure stemmed mainly from heightened ecosystem investments and losses on non-operating items. That said, adjusted earnings per ADS came in at 19.33 yuan, surpassing the market consensus of 18.51 yuan, with adjusted operating profit and net income also exceeding expectations.

Cash flow continued to demonstrate solid performance. Operating cash flow for the quarter reached 25.7 billion yuan, up roughly 19% from 21.6 billion yuan in the same period last year. As of June 30, the company's cash, cash equivalents, and short-term investments totaled 456.4 billion yuan, rising from 422.3 billion yuan at the end of 2025, providing ample liquidity to support ongoing business and ecosystem initiatives.

Management's commentary underscores a strategic emphasis on long-term platform ecosystem development. Executives noted that the company intensified ecosystem investments this quarter, prioritizing "merchant growth support" and "industry ecosystem reinforcement" as key focus areas. In the near term, this approach signals that the company is deliberately trading some profit performance for enhanced platform health and sustainable competitive advantages.

Following the earnings announcement, PDD Holdings Inc shares initially dipped in pre-market trading before rebounding sharply, currently up over 3%, after having fallen nearly 5% earlier.

Revenue Growth Decelerates, Transaction Services Take Center Stage

In the second quarter, PDD Holdings Inc revenue grew 8% year-on-year to 112.36 billion yuan, slightly below the anticipated 115.2 billion yuan. Breaking down the business structure, transaction services revenue stood out at 54.7 billion yuan, up 13% year-on-year, emerging as the main growth catalyst for the quarter.

In contrast, online marketing services and other revenue reached 57.6 billion yuan, increasing approximately 3.5% year-on-year, marking a notable slowdown from prior periods. The two revenue streams are now nearly equivalent in scale, elevating the strategic importance of transaction services.

On a cumulative first-half basis, online marketing services revenue was approximately 107.6 billion yuan, while transaction services revenue reached about 111 billion yuan, with the latter now essentially matching the former. As platform transaction volumes expand, PDD Holdings Inc's revenue mix is increasingly tilting toward transaction services.

Earnings Under Pressure, Yet Core Operating Metrics Show Resilience

Profit performance displayed divergence across metrics. Second-quarter operating profit was approximately 27.8 billion yuan, up 8% year-on-year; net income attributable to ordinary shareholders was roughly 27.2 billion yuan, down 12% year-on-year. Under Non-GAAP measures, net income stood at 28.49 billion yuan, a 13% decline.

However, from the perspective of closely watched adjusted figures, the company's profitability still exceeded market forecasts. Adjusted earnings per ADS reached 19.33 yuan for the quarter, beating the projected 18.51 yuan; adjusted operating profit of 29.07 billion yuan surpassed the 28.41 billion yuan estimate; and adjusted net income of 28.49 billion yuan exceeded the 28.02 billion yuan consensus.

Profit margins were affected by increased investments and fluctuations in non-operating items. The "other income/(loss), net" line recorded a loss of approximately 7.4 billion yuan in the second quarter, compared to a modest gain in the year-ago period, significantly weighing on net income. Meanwhile, net interest and investment income reached 13.5 billion yuan, up about 30% year-on-year, partially offsetting this drag.

Rising Expenses Signal Investment Phase for Ecosystem Development

In the second quarter, the company's cost of revenue was 48 billion yuan, up roughly 5% year-on-year; combined operating expenses for sales and marketing, general and administrative, and research and development totaled approximately 36.6 billion yuan, rising 13% year-on-year, outpacing revenue growth.

Among these, sales and marketing expenses were 29.7 billion yuan, up about 9% year-on-year; R&D expenses reached 4.6 billion yuan, climbing 27% year-on-year; and general and administrative expenses were 2.3 billion yuan, surging 53% year-on-year. The pronounced increases in R&D and governance-related spending reflect the company's continued commitment to strengthening platform capabilities, technological investments, and compliance infrastructure.

Management explicitly stated that ecosystem investments were further expanded this quarter, concentrating on merchant development and industry ecosystem construction. In essence, the company is not treating short-term profit maximization as its sole objective, instead continuing to channel resources into improving the platform ecosystem to create room for future growth.

Cash Flow Maintains Growth, Reserves Remain Substantial

Despite the year-on-year decline in net income, operating cash flow actually improved during the quarter. Second-quarter operating cash flow totaled 25.7 billion yuan, up approximately 19% year-on-year; cumulative first-half operating cash flow reached 42.1 billion yuan, an increase of roughly 13%.

As of June 30, the company's cash, cash equivalents, and short-term investments totaled around 456.4 billion yuan, growing from 422.3 billion yuan at the end of 2025. This robust cash position provides strong backing for continued investment in business operations, technology, and ecosystem development.

The balance sheet remains solid as well. At the end of the second quarter, total assets were approximately 663.4 billion yuan, total liabilities stood at about 215.6 billion yuan, with a debt-to-asset ratio of roughly 32.5%; shareholders' equity increased from 413.4 billion yuan at the start of the year to 447.8 billion yuan.
