Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk stated on Thursday that the final design for the company's next-generation AI6 chip could be completed as early as December. This milestone, known as tape-out, marks the point when the chip design is finalized and sent for manufacturing. Musk previously indicated last year that Samsung Electronics would manufacture the AI6 chips, which are expected to be used in autonomous vehicles and humanoid robots produced at Tesla's new facility in Taylor, Texas. The South Korean company had earlier entered into a $16.5 billion agreement with Tesla to supply artificial intelligence chips. When asked about the timeline for finalizing the chip design, Musk commented on his social media platform X, "If we're fortunate and AI advancements accelerate, we may achieve tape-out for the AI6 chip in December." A Samsung executive mentioned on Wednesday that the company plans to begin production of Tesla's chips using its advanced 2-nanometer process technology in the second half of 2027.
