The Virtue of Patience in Apple and Berkshire's Investment Strategy

Exercising immense patience is essential for waiting on exceptional investment opportunities, a principle demonstrated in practice by both Warren Buffett and Apple, whether as the investor or the investment target.

At the recently concluded Berkshire Hathaway shareholder meeting, Buffett reflected on the decade-long journey of investing in Apple: an initial outlay of approximately $35 billion ten years ago has now grown to around $185 billion. He remarked that he did nothing extraordinary; essentially, he entrusted the capital to Apple's management, which made Berkshire's performance appear stronger—an operational approach they favor most.

These comments highlight the core value of patient waiting. Berkshire's patience is evident not only in long-term holding but also in the cautious deliberation before entering a position. It wasn't until 2016, prompted by his deputy Todd Combs, that Buffett began viewing Apple as a consumer goods company with enviable pricing power rather than a tech stock, leading to a significant accumulation of shares.

However, maintaining such patience is becoming increasingly challenging. Berkshire has been a net seller of equities for thirteen consecutive quarters, with its cash reserves swelling to approximately $277 billion by the end of 2025. Before his retirement, Buffett had reduced his Apple stake by about 75%, admitting he sold too early, though he also indicated that he has yet to find prices attractive enough to initiate large-scale repurchases.

For Apple, patience is equally being tested. In the artificial intelligence race, Apple's strategic deployment has been noticeably slower compared to rivals like Microsoft and Alphabet. Investors are closely watching whether Apple can define the consumer experience in the AI era as it once did with the smartphone. The strategy of patiently awaiting returns is facing growing difficulties today, yet Buffett's past successes serve as a reminder to the market: the ability to identify genuine value and place confident bets remains a rare and precious skill.
