XPeng X9 MPV Faces Widespread Failures in Hot Weather, Sparking Recall Demands and Official Apology

During a recent period of high temperatures, numerous owners of the XPeng X9 have reported vehicle breakdowns while driving, with extreme cases directly impacting road safety and normal travel.

Some owners have reported that the air suspension developed leaks during operation, causing the vehicle body to sag on one side or entirely, rendering the car undrivable. They attribute this batch failure of the air suspension directly to the hot environment.

XPeng Inc. has issued a public apology, stating it will introduce a special warranty enhancement program. This includes extending the warranty period for core components and safeguarding accompanying vehicle benefits to address the recent concentration of user issues.

However, the apology from XPeng has elicited two distinctly different reactions among consumers.

Supporters believe the brand is taking proactive responsibility and providing some assurance to consumers through the extended warranty, demonstrating an appropriate attitude. Skeptics, however, have raised pointed questions such as, "With such a widespread fault, weren't extreme heat tests conducted before launch?" and "Why is there no recall for a batch common fault?" The controversy continues to escalate.

XPeng X9 Breakdowns Linked to Heatwave

Recently, multiple XPeng X9 owners in Chongqing collectively reported sudden vehicle failures and mass breakdowns while driving, which quickly sparked widespread discussion.

Reports indicate that a number of XPeng X9 owners in Chongqing recently reported their vehicles experiencing sudden malfunctions and collective breakdowns during travel. Notably, a large number of owners in local car enthusiast groups reported similar issues: vehicles parked in underground garages during the day experienced air suspension leaks and body sagging, either on one side or overall, during normal afternoon driving, making them impossible to continue operating.

As Chongqing was experiencing a sustained heatwave during this period, with maximum temperatures reaching 40°C, owners widely believe this batch air suspension failure is directly related to the high-temperature environment.

Public information shows the XPeng X9 is a premium model under the XPeng brand and a key piece in its strategy to target the market above 300,000 yuan. In May 2023, XPeng CEO He Xiaopeng announced on Weibo that its new MPV model would be named the X9, claiming it would "use this product to open up the 'youthful' MPV market."

At its launch in January 2024, this all-electric MPV started at 359,800 yuan, with the top configuration exceeding 410,000 yuan. In 2025, the XPeng X9 topped the personal user delivery list for premium MPVs in December and secured the top spot for MPV sales in Hong Kong in the second half of the year and the fourth quarter. On June 25 this year, XPeng announced that X9 deliveries had surpassed 60,000 units, setting a new record for MPV delivery speed among new automaker brands.

However, unlike isolated, sporadic faults, this is a batch, same-scenario, same-season common issue, which has once again plunged the high-end air suspension configuration, a point of pride for the XPeng X9, into controversy.

In response to owner reports of air spring failures, XPeng recently posted an announcement titled "Upgraded Warranty Plan for XPeng X9 Air Springs" in its official community. The announcement stated that the company has noted some XPeng X9 users experienced air spring failures in extreme scenarios like high temperatures, leading to a poor user experience, for which XPeng deeply apologizes.

For the air spring failures affecting some XPeng X9 vehicles, the XPeng Group will provide a special upgraded warranty plan. Effective immediately, the warranty for the XPeng X9 front air spring system is extended to 8 years or 160,000 kilometers, and this warranty is unaffected by changes in vehicle ownership.

Consumer Demands for a Recall

However, this apology from XPeng has not fully quelled the controversy surrounding the incident. On social media, many consumers have raised sharp questions: "With such a large-scale fault, weren't extreme heat tests done before launch?", "Why is there no recall for a batch common fault?", and "Shouldn't there be a recall for part replacement?" The debate continues to intensify.

Furthermore, a review reveals that quality issues with the XPeng X9 have been reported more than once. For instance, in June of this year, an owner reported, "Two months ago, I purchased a nearly new XPeng X9 from a XPeng store. The vehicle's core LCC and intelligent driving functions frequently report errors and are completely unusable."

On consumer complaint platforms, the "XPeng automobile" keyword is associated with thousands of consumer complaints, with "frequent failures," "harassment for orders," and "after-sales evasion" being core issues raised by consumers.

An industry analyst commented, "As a new automaker, XPeng's core strategy is to attract consumers through continuous technological innovation and feature iteration to drive sales and expand market share. However, the application of new technologies often lacks mature experience, with many features being industry-first implementations, so encountering faults is almost inevitable. It can be said that while innovation boosts brand visibility, it naturally carries quality risks. If XPeng wants to build brand recognition through innovation, the accompanying negative aspect is a higher likelihood of quality issues. In contrast, traditional automakers extensively use mature technologies validated over many years, resulting in naturally higher reliability. Therefore, the quality issues currently exposed by XPeng are an inevitable part of its development path; no new automaker can bypass these problems."

Broader Context and Future Plans

It is noteworthy that during the period when the XPeng X9 was embroiled in controversy over failures, XPeng held a brand day and global launch event for the MONA L03 in Munich, Germany yesterday. The company officially launched the MONA L03, the first global model of its MONA series, with sales set to begin in 65 countries worldwide this year. XPeng also announced plans to achieve mass production of its first flying car this year, aiming to accelerate the transition of low-altitude travel from concept to reality.

The analyst added, "From a market position perspective, although XPeng is currently in the first tier, its ranking is not solid. After all, its time on the market is still short, and it has not yet reached industry-leading levels in hard metrics like total vehicles in operation, dealer network, and charging infrastructure layout. These shortcomings in scale mean that if a large-scale quality incident erupts or there is a funding crunch, the impact on the company could be systemic, potentially even affecting the normal operation of retail stores. If funding issues arise, inventory and the supply chain would also come under direct pressure."

Regarding the much-discussed flying car plan, the analyst stated frankly, "This direction is still in the early exploratory stage globally and has not achieved large-scale commercial implementation. Although XPeng claims it will start mass production this year, judging from the industry's current state, order volumes are likely to be limited, as similar projects worldwide have not yet truly established a mass production process. I believe XPeng's high-profile announcement of this news is more intended to attract market attention and boost its financing rhythm rather than relying on orders to support performance in the short term. However, whether this strategy will be effective remains highly uncertain."

"In fact, this is a common practice among many new automakers: holding launch events even before the technology is mature or the product is off the production line," the analyst further commented. "Even leading players like Tesla have experienced multiple delays, indicating this approach is part of the survival logic for new automakers. Once news slows down and the pace of new product launches decelerates, market influence can rapidly decline, and sales will subsequently be noticeably affected."
